    Sex assignment in conditions affecting sex development

    The newborn infant with atypical genitalia presents a challenging clinical scenario and requires expert input. There have been appreciable advances in our knowledge of the underlying causes that may lead to a mere difference or a more serious disorder of sex development (DSD), the natural history of conditions, as well as the short and long-term complications of these conditions themselves, together with the clinical interventions that are associated with these conditions. With this information, the DSD expert can be more confident when discussing options with the parents of the newborn infant. By working within a multidisciplinary team, the expert should be able to support the family whilst individualising the management plan so that it is also cognizant of the shifts in societal attitudes and expectations around concepts of diversity and openness. It is, therefore, likely that the practice of assigning sex, especially in those cases where sex assignment is unclear on expert assessment, will continue to show temporal, social and geographical variations. It is imperative that clinical data for rare conditions such as these are collected in a standardized format and shared through a common registry so that any evidence that is used for future shifts in practice has a stronger foundation than that which is currently available

    Subjective information visualizations

    Information Visualizations (InfoViz) are systems that require high levels of cognitive processing. They revolve around the notion of decoding and interpreting visual patterns in order to achieve certain goals. We argue that purely designing for the visual will not allow for optimum experiences since there is more to InfoViz than just the visual. Interaction is a key to achieving higher levels of knowledge. In this position paper we present a different perspective on the underlying meaning of interaction, where we describe it as incorporating both the visual and the physical activities. By physical activities we mean the physical actions upon the physical input device/s. We argue that interaction is the key element for supporting users’ subjective experiences hence these experiences should first be understood. All the discussions in this paper are based upon on going work in the field of visualizing the literature knowledge domain (LKDViz)

    Information visualization is an experience in which both the aesthetic representations and interaction are part. Such an experience can be augmented through close consideration of its major components. Interaction is crucial to the experience, yet it has seldom been adequately explored in the field. We claim that direct mediated interaction can augment such an experience. This paper discusses the reasons behind such a claim and proposes a mediated interactive manipulation scheme based on the notion of directness. It also describes the ways in which such a claim will be validated. The Literature Knowledge Domain (LKD) is used as the concrete domain around which the discussions will be held

    Information Visualisation (InfoVis) is defined as an interactive visual representation of abstract data. We view the user’s interaction with InfoVis tools as an experience which is made up of a set of highly demanding cognitive activities. These activities assist users in making sense and gaining knowledge of the represented domain. Usability studies that involve a task-based analysis and usability questionnaires are not enough to capture such an experience. This paper discusses the challenges involved when it comes to evaluating InfoVis tools by giving an overview of the activities involved in an InfoVis experience and demonstrating how they affect the visualisation process. The argument in this paper is based on our experiences in designing, building and evaluating an academic literature visualisation tool

    Gaze-based teleprosthetic enables intuitive continuous control of complex robot arm use: Writing & drawing

    Eye tracking is a powerful mean for assistive technologies for people with movement disorders, paralysis and amputees. We present a highly intuitive eye tracking-controlled robot arm operating in 3-dimensional space based on the user's gaze target point that enables tele-writing and drawing. The usability and intuitive usage was assessed by a “tele” writing experiment with 8 subjects that learned to operate the system within minutes of first time use. These subjects were naive to the system and the task and had to write three letters on a white board with a white board pen attached to the robot arm's endpoint. The instructions are to imagine they were writing text with the pen and look where the pen would be going, they had to write the letters as fast and as accurate as possible, given a letter size template. Subjects were able to perform the task with facility and accuracy, and movements of the arm did not interfere with subjects ability to control their visual attention so as to enable smooth writing. On the basis of five consecutive trials there was a significant decrease in the total time used and the total number of commands sent to move the robot arm from the first to the second trial but no further improvement thereafter, suggesting that within writing 6 letters subjects had mastered the ability to control the system. Our work demonstrates that eye tracking is a powerful means to control robot arms in closed-loop and real-time, outperforming other invasive and non-invasive approaches to Brain-Machine-Interfaces in terms of calibration time (<;2 minutes), training time (<;10 minutes), interface technology costs. We suggests that gaze-based decoding of action intention may well become one of the most efficient ways to interface with robotic actuators - i.e. Brain-Robot-Interfaces - and become useful beyond paralysed and amputee users also for the general teleoperation of robotic and exoskeleton in human augmentation
